Haverstraw Day Care Pre-K Program

You will always be a part of your child's day

Your child changes every day. That is why Haverstraw Day Care/Learning Center teachers and staff provide daily updates on your child's development. Each afternoon, we will let you know about the fun learning experiences your child is enjoying. This includes your child's activities, developmental changes and, of course, milestones. Big and small. At your convenience, we will be happy to meet with you to discuss your child's progress. We also have comprehensive methods—both formal and informal—to ensure we communicate thoroughly with you about your child's discoveries. We maintain a daily communication notebook for each child documenting progress and activities. This book is taken home on a daily basis so you the parent, can be apprised of your child’s activities and progress. Parents are encouraged to use the notebook to communicate with staff as well.

At Haverstraw Day Care/Learning Center, you will find that our teachers are eager to understand your needs and actively listen to your suggestions. We honor your role as a parent and as the first and most important teacher in your child's life. We work together with you to support your child's healthy growth and development by sharing the learning and excitement your child experiences each day.

Preschoolers are eager to learn
Preschoolers' worlds open up in new ways. They are improving coordination, beginning to combine ideas and learning more complex games, all while learning about themselves and each other. Our preschool curriculum introduces language, math, science and social skills in a logical, natural sequence to encourage learning one step at a time. Our teachers also provide plenty of individual attention to support your child's unique needs.
Our program provides a rich classroom environment where children are encouraged to explore and are challenged to learn, while making friends and developing self-confidence. They strengthen their cognitive skills with fun memory games where they match objects that share similar characteristics. And because they learn by doing, we provide opportunities for hands-on experience, such as creating collages, which combines creative expression with a tactile experience.

Your child will develop math and science skills with our hands-on experiences.
Thematic units encourage curiosity, self-direction and confidence.
Daily language experiences are introduced to support literacy and language development.
Observation-based assessments are used to monitor learning.
Portfolios are used to collect your child's work and capture learning.
You will enjoy regular communication with teachers so that you are informed about your child's day

Your preschooler's day
Our curriculum is organized into theme-based units. The units begin with topics most familiar to the children, then address more complex topics as the children develop skills and confidence. These thematic units prompt discussions about their world. Each unit incorporates language, mathematics, science, creative arts, music, motor skills and social development.

Language and Literacy
This is a critical time to develop reading and writing skills, so we use high-quality literature to promote a love of reading.

Math Skills
Children are introduced to the rich world of numbers, including sorting, grouping and as well as more advanced math skills.

Social Development
During group time, children learn to listen, share, take turns, cooperate, demonstrate and give and receive feedback. These skills support their ability to flourish in a classroom environment, giving them a chance to demonstrate what they are learning.

Creativity and Imagination
Children have a chance to showcase their abundant creativity through dramatic play, music and art. Creative activity develops imagination and independence, and fosters confidence.

Physical Development
Children develop their large motor skills, such as running, jumping, throwing and kicking. They also practice coordination skills needed for writing, drawing, cutting and other activities.
